Bowie gave us the term 'plastic soul', which referred to the period he recorded 'Young Americans' plus some material for 'Station to Station' - he successfully took on a genre of which he interpreted brilliantly.

some people get by with a little understanding, some people get by with a whole lot more..
think back to when Gary Numan wrote and recorded 'Cars' in 1979 and if we don't think we've lost something we're crazy...but if we think it's coming back anytime soon then we are complete fools... can you still recall in the juke box hall when the music played and the world spun round to a brand new sound in those far off days.. in their blue suede shoes they would scream and shout as they sang the blues, let it all hang out.. rock and roll..

Story behind the song
We wanted to do a track which captured some of the character of which Bowie delivered via his songs between that of 1975-76 (his so called 'plastic soul' period). This song draws on tracks like 'Word on a Wing' and 'Wild is the Wind' and while not copying these we still nonetheless were heavily influenced by them (and that wonderful period Bowie pursued the unthinkable notion of English white boys doing soul music) - he wasn't frightened to veer off the path and he'd go back for a bit more in '83 with Nile and finally be accepted as a mainstream artist.
Lyrics
Still I don't know But something tells me I still don't know So where did you want to go So many times I'd wander round town Pick up the pieces at the lost and found But somethin' tells me While you're goin up Ohhhh, I'm goin down... You got an angel lookin' over your shoulder You got a cross that you carry as some sign You're like a criminal Sittin' in the corner Just waitin' out your time But there's no parole here, ah no no no Nuthin' to see Babe it'll be a long time before you're free So where did you wanna go? Oh so where did you wanna go?
